FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Apache Junction Water District Celebrates 20 Years

Apache JunctionApache Junction, Arizona………………………….. August 21, 2014

Formed on August 2, 1994, the Apache Junction Water Utilities Community Facilities District (WUCFD) is a special district initiated by the city of Apache Junction. The district covers approximately eight square miles of Apache Junction. In 1996, the population served was approximately 7,846; the projected population for 2014 is 14,348.

In addition to almost doubling the population served, the WUCFD has had many accomplishments over the 20 years of service. In 2007, a Water Conservation grant was secured from the Bureau of Reclamation. As a result the Water District was able to conserve 20 million gallons of water over a two year period. In 2008, a Homeland Security Grant was secured in the amount of $86,665.  Funds were used to integrate a security system and barrier improvements that fortified water infrastructure.

Over the past several years, $11 million in Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA) loans were obtained to upgrade the drinking water system, including arsenic removal and an interconnection with the City of Mesa for deliveries of Central Arizona Project water. Looking forward, $9 million in WIFA loans were recently secured to mitigate declining groundwater levels and reduce costs of water deliveries. The funds will be used to reduce reliance on groundwater supplies by acquiring two new allocations of Central Arizona Project water. Additionally, the first water treatment plant is currently being planned and designed. It is expected to be treating 1.5 million gallons of water per day by the spring of 2016.

In honor of the district’s 20 years of service, customers are invited to enter a drawing at the Apache Junction Water Utilities Community Facilities District office, located at 300 E. Superstition, Building D, on Tuesday, August 26. For more information, please contact Andria Samuels at asamuels@ajcity.net or (480) 474 – 2620.
