Appeal of Florence Copper Mine permit is denied

A state panel on Tuesday denied an appeal of Florence Copper’s state environmental permit, putting the mine a step closer to a small-scale test run off Hunt Highway.

The Arizona Water Quality Appeals Board rejected the appeal brought by the town of Florence, Southwest Value Partners and Pulte Homes. The WQAB ruling upholds Florence Copper’s “Significant Amendment” issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality last year.

“Our project has multiple safeguards in place to protect the environment, and it was evident that the WQAB understood that both the environment and public health would be protected by this permit,” Dan Johnson, Florence Copper vice president and general manager, said in a prepared statement.
