CAC to Close Olympic-size Pool

Pinal County, AZ – Central Arizona College is closing the Signal Peak Campus pool effective May 14, 2015. The 40 year old CACOlympic-sized pool is not repairable in its current condition nor is it sustainable.

“This has been a difficult decision and due diligence was taken. For the past year we have considered many options,” stated Dr. Doris Helmich, President of CAC. “The repairs that are necessary to maintain a safe environment for the community are too enormous, totaling more than $1 million.”

Years of deferred maintenance has occurred since 2008 due to ongoing state budget cuts.

“Our mission critical activities must be prioritized as public funding continues to be scrutinized and diminished,” added Dr. Helmich.

CAC has worked collaboratively with community organizations such as the Arizona Seals club program and Coolidge High School swim team to provide a venue for swim team practices and competitions. Additionally, the pool was used for local triathlons and other events.

“The pool has needed substantial work for many years now, it’s truly sad that a true asset to the college and the community will be lost, said Laura Logan, Aquatics Adjunct Faculty. “Our families have been blessed by the unique partnership we had with CAC.”
