CASA GRANDE — A study evaluating the costs and benefits of implementing a citywide transit system will be discussed Monday night during a City Council study session.

Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization has been facilitating the study, which aims to examine the viability of developing a transit system that meets the demands of the city.

When completed, the study will list three alternative plans for integrating a transit system. The study will also distinguish how the costs of these three plans would differ if they were privately or publicly run.

Casa Grande already receives some transit service from Central Arizona Regional Transit, based in Coolidge, but no service currently exists that covers most of the city’s 19-square-mile span.

During the council’s regular meeting on Monday, members will vote on whether to approve spending $150,000 on illuminated street signs. Twenty-six of the city’s 33 signalized intersections currently have illuminated signs, according to city documents, and the authorized funds would guarantee every intersection has well-maintained signage.

The council will also decide whether to authorize the purchase of 57 new two-way radios for about $343,000. The radios would be utilized by the Casa Grande Police Department, which has been evaluating how to update its radio technology the last five years.

The City Council study session begins at 6 p.m., with the regular meeting to follow at 7 p.m., in the City Hall council chambers, 510 E. Florence Blvd.
