Florence to spend almost all Prop. 123 money on raises

FLORENCE — Pinal County’s largest school district will use its Proposition 123 money to give staff raises.

The Florence Unified School District Governing Board held a special meeting Monday to approve raises for teaching and nonteaching staff, with the funds expected to arrive beginning in June from Prop. 123, passed by voters earlier this month. Raises will be based on each employee’s consecutive years with the district.

Assistant Superintendent Tony Jimenez told the board earlier this month that the district had hoped to give raises and have some money left over for capital needs. But after calculating the raises, he told the board Monday that “it doesn’t leave a whole heckuva lot, if any, for anything else.”

Raises for teachers (“certified staff”) will cost FUSD approximately $1.1 million, and raises for nonteaching (“classified”) staff are projected to cost between $500,000 and $600,000. That just about covers the district’s total Prop. 123 funding for the new school year, which is expected to be $1.7 million.
