Lawmaker plans run for Apache Junction justice court, ending bid for re-election to Legislature

State Rep. Doug Coleman plans to run for a justice of the peace seat in 2018, foregoing a bid for re-election in the Legislature’s 16th District.

The Republican from Apache Junction announced on Facebook last week that he will seek election as head of his hometown’s Justice Court rather than run for a fourth and final term as a lawmaker.

“At the Legislature, we’re kind of doing things at the 30,000-foot level,” Coleman, 60, said Wednesday. “The justice of the peace really has a pretty direct impact on individuals and individual lives.”
