Maricopa to use grant money for floodplain analysis, not food bank

City council members have selected a project to receive funds from the federally-funded Community Development Block Grant — but it was a choice that came with some controversy.
The grant provides $265,000 over the course of two years to a project within the city. There are a variety of things the money could be used for, but one of the requirements is that the projects benefits low- or middle-income residents.
There were four projects submitted for review to City Council at its Tuesday meeting: a floodplain analysis for the Heritage District, Taft Avenue half-street improvements, Edwards Avenue half-street improvements and the F.O.R. (Food, Opportunity and Resources) Maricopa Food Bank.
