New book examines decline in sheep industry in Pinal, across the country

With her latest book, “Where Have All The Sheep Gone?,” author and historical geographer Barbara Jaquay hopes to shine a light on an industry that’s been on the decline for several decades.

“Where Have All The Sheep Gone?” tells the story of the rise and fall of Arizona’s sheep industry from its beginnings in the 1500s to now, a time when the remaining sheep herding families are fading away.

Much of the book focuses on two Casa Grande sheep herding families, the Auzas and the Manterolas.
