Pinal County’s transportation planning body invites the public to identify the most dangerous roads for motorists and pedestrians through a new interactive website.

The Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization recently launched an online tool where residents can highlight trouble spots on a map that stretches from Coolidge to Picacho Peak.

Visitors pick one of three icons (categorized into motorists, cyclists, pedestrians) and drag it to wherever on the map they think is hazardous for that population. Users can also attach a comment to their designated icon.

One user has already placed an “unsafe for vehicles” icon at the Jimmie Kerr Boulevard exit on Interstate 10 and commented on how the area “feels like someone is going to hit you because traffic moves very fast.”

The input will be used to decipher which transportation projects get listed on the organization’s Strategic Transportation Safety Plan.

Sun Corridor MPO works to secure funding for projects that benefit the region of Casa Grande, Eloy, Coolidge and some unincorporated portions of the county.

Irene Higgs, acting director of Sun Corridor MPO, said the organization is looking for new methods to engage the public, having mostly done in-person public meetings in the past.

“We want to hear from anyone who moves about the Sun Corridor MPO area and can point out areas where there are problems,” Higgs said. “This will really help us make good transportation planning decisions.”

The public has until May 11 to submit input on the interactive map, which can be found at scmpo.mysocialpinpoint.com/scmpo.
