Queen Creek officials say proposed San Tan Valley incorporation map unlawful

The town of Queen Creek doesn’t oppose the incorporation of San Tan Valley, but officials say the current map violates Arizona Law.

On Wednesday the Town Council adopted a resolution that cites several problems with the STV incorporation committee’s proposed boundaries for a new city.

The San Tan Valley incorporation map, which includes 68 square miles, overlaps Queen Creek’s planning boundaries by 6 square miles. It also includes two areas that have active annexation applications with Queen Creek. Vote San Tan Valley responded on Facebook by citing the Guide to Municipal Incorporation in Arizona from the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, which states that any annexed areas will be left out of the incorporation petition by the Board of Supervisors. This, however, does not address what would happen if an annexation were in progress, but not completed, by the time the incorporation petition was filed.
