Rezoning sought for copper filtering plant north of Florence

Resolution Coppper Co. would give the federal government more than 5,300 acres in several areas of southeast Arizona in exchange for more than 2,400 acres it wants to mine near Superior, in Pinal County.

Copper ore from the future Resolution mine near Superior will be mixed with water and sent 20 miles by pipeline to an isolated location north of Florence, where it will be filtered and shipped out for processing.

The Pinal County Planning and Zoning Commission has already recommended approval of the “copper concentrate filter plant and transfer facility” with stipulations. Resolution Copper and county planning staff are working on a roadway development agreement before the rezoning request goes before the Board of Supervisors for final approval.

The company is seeking to rezone 560 acres at Skyline Drive and the Magma Arizona Railroad Co. (MARRCO) tracks from Single Family Residential and General Business to “I-3” Industrial Planned Area Development.
