Sen. Barbara McGuire announces exploratory committee for Congress in CD-1

Barbara McGuireState Senator Barbara McGuire, D-Legislative District 8, announced today that she is opening a committee to explore running for Congressional District 1.

“The residents of rural Arizona deserve a representative who understands the unique needs of our communities. They deserve someone who will fight every day to create jobs and uphold their values,” said McGuire. “Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick served our district with distinction, and rural Arizona cannot afford to lose a champion in Congress. That is why I am exploring a run for Congressional District 1.”

“I am going to take the next few weeks to discuss this possibility with my constituents, friends, and family. My decision will be based on where I think I make make the greatest difference for the people of rural Arizona.”

Sen. McGuire is a life-long Arizonan and lives in the town of Kearny. She currently represents large portions of Pinal and Gila Counties, including a portion of the Gila River Indian Community, and her legislative district is almost entirely within Congressional District 1.

Over the past two decades Sen. McGuire has served as a Salvation Army Unit Director, State Representative, small-business owner, Farm Bureau member, Ladies Auxiliary VFW member, honorary Major Civil Air Patrol, NRA member, Sheriff’s Posse member, and most recently as State Senator. She has also had the pleasure of working for a school district and served on the Inter-agency Council on Long-Term Care.

Sen. McGuire is known as an effective advocate for rural Arizona. She was appointed Rural Liaison by her caucus and was a founder of the Mining Caucus in 2013. She was awarded the American Heart Association Greater Phoenix Division 2012-2013, Outstanding Legislator of the Year, and the 2013 Legislative Friend from the AZ League of Cities and Towns. She has successfully advocated for an increase to the University Extension funds, CPR, and school bus safety.

McGuire is the daughter of a Veteran World War II Navy pilot. She has been happily married to Jim McGuire for the past 44 years. She has a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
