SUPERIOR — After the outpouring of anger and frustration that spilled out of Superior residents when they were told their mayor had stolen money from the town, there was little doubt they could mobilize into action.

With enough signatures collected and submitted to Pinal County, a recall election will commence for Mayor Jayme Valenzuela in November.

Valenzuela has steadfastly refused the demands of a chorus of people who called for him to resign when a third-party audit showed he used the town’s debit card eight separate times since 2012 to make cash withdrawals for personal use totaling $2,300.

With Valenzuela in a defiant stance, a citizens group pulled a recall packet and started collecting signatures.

Nancy Vogler, who helped lead the effort, said the group had to collect 102 valid signatures to get Valenzuela on the ballot for a recall. The group blew past that number to collect 187.
