State audit critical of some Pinal County accounts

The Arizona Auditor General’s Office found several deficiencies in practices in a 2017 audit of Pinal County, including the lingering presence of a former sheriff.

The deficiencies in practice were related primarily to the Sheriff’s Office, the Finance Department and the accounting for federal programs, which was late for the second year in a row. This is according to an audit report dated Oct. 5.

As of June 23, former Sheriff Paul Babeu was still a signer on the inmate bank account. The county responded in the report that the signer had not been changed due to changes in elected officials and administrative personnel coming at the beginning of the year. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office changed the signer on the account to the current sheriff, Mark Lamb, once the deficiency was pointed out.
