Unofficial tally shows Apache Junction Home Rule passing at Aug. 30 election

According to unofficial Pinal and Maricopa counties election results, the continuation of the local alternative expenditure limitation, also known as Home Rule, was approved by voters at the Aug. 30 primary election. In the same election, Apache Junction residents cast ballots for the mayor’s seat and three council seats.

Home rule allows the city council members to make annual budget decisions for their city “at home” rather than by using the state statute; the latter limits the city to the expenditure of estimated available revenues whether such expenditures are less than or exceed the state-imposed limit, according to a story previously run in the Independent . It has been in effect in Apache Junction since 1985, when city voters approved it for the first time. Home rule must be resubmitted to voters every four years.
