Work to restore a historic sign begins

A neon sign that was once a beacon for tired motorists and area residents has begun a journey toward restoration.

On Tuesday, June 13, the Sunset Court motel’s neon sign was loaded onto a truck bound for Tucson. Its final destination would be the workshop of neon sign restoration expert and artist Jude Cook, who expects to work about eight weeks to bring the sign back to life.

“This sign is part of our rich community history. It’s a reminder of the motels and businesses that existed when neon was in its heyday,” said Marge Jantz, chairwoman of the Historic Preservation Commission. “If we didn’t restore it, it would have ended up in a landfill.”
