Apache Junction City Council, Facilities District Okay Agreement for Restrooms at New Park

flatiron-community-park(NEWS RELEASE) A partnership between the city of Apache Junction and the Superstition Mountains Community Facilities District No. 1 (SMCFD) will result in the addition of permanent restrooms to the city’s downtown park.

Under the partnership, approved by the City Council on Tuesday and the district’s board on Sept. 23, SMCFD will contribute $62,000 toward the construction of restrooms at Flatiron Community Park, which are scheduled to cost $124,026.65.

“This is a fantastic way for one of our partners in the community to show its support to our families and children,” said John Insalaco, mayor of Apache Junction. “For the Sewer District to step up like this, we are so thankful to further improve what is going to be a great resource for everyone in our city – the Flatiron Community Park.”

SMCFD, the city’s sewer service provider, received more connection fees in fiscal year 2015-16 than were budgeted and the district board approved using that additional revenue toward the community park.

Plans call for more than an acre of turf, sidewalks, dozens of parking spaces and a splash pad at the park to be completed in early 2017. Construction is underway on Flatiron Community Park, the long-awaited downtown public space intended for special events, concerts and play.

The park is funded mostly by development fees with additional funds generated by grants and a sponsorship program.

In partnership with the City Council, and the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Flatiron Community Park name was developed by the City’s Youth Advisory Council.
