Area educators back Douglas proposal to keep tax hike to pay teachers more

The state’s top education official is proposing extending a sales tax that helps fund teachers, and area officials agree with the move.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas has proposed extending the sales tax commonly known as Proposition 301, which was passed by voters in 2000. Douglas is proposing increasing the tax from 6/10 of a cent to a full cent. The increase would generate an additional $400 million a year for teacher salaries and building projects.

Prop. 301 sunsets in 2020 unless renewed by voters.
