CASA GRANDE — The matriarch of the family that donated land for the city’s community recreation center turns 100 on Sunday.

Carlotta Gilbert has lived a life committed to investing in her local community. She first arrived in Casa Grande in her 20s and married Guy Gilbert, a member of a prominent farm family with deep roots in Arizona.

The couple were familiar faces around town, often having their names printed in the Casa Grande Dispatch for making appearances at local social events.

They each were generous with their time. Both served on the board for Hoemako Hospital, which operated on the corner of Florence Boulevard and Trekell Road before a new hospital was built in 1984.
