Coolidge approves 2% property tax hike

In a move that seemed to surprise even those making it, the Coolidge City Council approved an increase of the city’s property tax rate by 2 percent, the maximum allowed by the state.
After a budget cycle where there was little indication that a tax hike was coming, the council was split on July 6 by a margin of 5-2, with councilmembers Gary Lewis and Rob Hudelson voting against the increase. The vote moves the rate from 1.8494 to 1.9302, which the city currently projects to bring in around $80,000 in extra revenue. If a home is valued at the same amount as it was the previous year, this means there will be an $8 increase for the year on a home valued at $100,000. That $8 will go up or down should the valuation be altered.
