Coolidge mayor sees recreational marijuana as future boon to city coffers

With more and more people shopping online instead of going to brick-and-mortar stores, cities are scrambling to find ways to make up for the loss in sales tax revenue.
For some, this means looking outside the box when it comes to finding new revenue sources to make up for the loss associated with people shopping online — a stat that jumped to 12 percent last year compared to 10 percent from a year ago, according to Coolidge mayor Jon Thompson.
As a result of this growing trend, Thompson has looked at other potential revenue sources, including leasing space on street light towers to cell phone companies and telling members of the business community at the Chamber of Commerce’s breakfast with the mayor, that the city is counting on government tax off of the sale of marijuana – once it becomes legalized for recreational use.
