Florence Council votes to lower little-used tax

Just in time for Christmas, the Town Council voted to lower a tax.

The town of Florence has cut its use tax from 3 percent to 2 percent, making it equal to the town’s sales tax, on the advice of the Arizona Department of Revenue.

The change is retroactive to Sept. 1, 2010, and local taxpayers who paid use tax at 3 percent are entitled to a partial refund. Refunds would be relatively small; the total amount of potential refunds is about $7,700, according to a town staff report.

The use tax is charged on out-of-state purchases. The purpose is to protect local merchants from being undercut by out-of-state sellers who are not subject to the town’s sales tax.
