Maricopa researches new bike and pedestrian railroad crossings

The City of Maricopa hosted an open house Tuesday to share ideas on bicycle and pedestrian crossings near the Union Pacific Railroad.

With the upcoming construction of the overpass on State Route 347, the city recognized a need to provide safe and efficient crossing areas for pedestrians or those on bikes.

Dean Chambers, senior landscape architect for J2 Designs, the company leading the project, said the majority of existing crossings in this area are “wildcat crossings,” meaning they are done illegally. To ensure the safety of citizens when the overpass is built, he said they needed more practical options.
