Mayor Ed Honea: Transit plan making inroads in Marana

maranaThe Regional Transportation Authority is about to enter its 10th year of implementing its 20-year transportation plan, approved by voters in May 2006.

In that time, the RTA has made great strides. Of 200 promised bus pullouts, 108 are complete. Of 200 promised intersections, 149 are complete. Of 550 miles of promised bike lanes, 226 are complete. Of 35 roadway corridors, eight are complete and 11 more are partially complete/under construction. To date, the RTA has invested more than $740 million in the region, not including any leveraged regional or federal dollars.

The real impact of the RTA plan is the overall financial contribution that it has provided to our region’s available transportation funding resources. Without the resources of the half-cent transaction privilege tax that funds the RTA plan, our region would have seen an even greater economic downturn in the past five years.
