New Apache Junction treatment plant means water independence

This northern Pinal County city is about to become much more independent in its water treatment and distribution to customers.

The Superstition Area Water Plant, a long-time coming for the Apache Junction Water District, analyzes and purifies Central Arizona Project water — with a specific annual allotment for the facility — before providing it to customers. Previously, the Apache Junction Water District received CAP water from an interconnect in Mesa.

According to the 2015 Apache Junction Water District’s annual drinking water quality report — also called the Consumer Confidence Report — the district supplies a population of more than 14,000 with groundwater pumped from the Eastern Salt River Sub-Basin Aquifer. It’s then treated for arsenic removal if necessary, disinfected with chlorine and pumped into storage tanks to go through the CAP system.
