New library, community and aquatic centers to open this summer in Florence

In an era when city and town budgets are often crunched for cash, it’s rare that a town the size of Florence is able to afford a much-needed multimillion-dollar project on its own.

“It’s being paid for with money that’s on hand,” said Bryan Hughes, Florence’s Parks and Recreation director, about the new library, community center and aquatic center being constructed at 778 N. Main St. near the town hall building.

Hughes said many people have assumed the town must have received some federal or state funding in order to pay for the $13.5 million project.
