Residents urge town to keep up the fight against Florence Copper

Council members said the town will continue fighting to prevent the Florence Copper Project from operating, despite the recent dismissal of their federal appeals.

“We’re not giving up the battle,” Councilman John Anderson said at Monday’s regular Town Council meeting. Several citizens also urged the town to stay the course. One Florence Sun City resident said she and her husband hope to someday leave their home to their son and daughter-in-law. “Please save our water and town,” she said.

Anderson said as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Sept. 22 decision, town officials learned the Florence Copper Project has had an “exemption permit” from the EPA since 1997.
