Shope will seek re-election rather than run for congress

Laying rumors to rest, Rep. T.J. Shope confirmed in a statement Wednesday that he will seek re-election in the Arizona House rather than aiming for a congressional campaign.

Shope, R-Coolidge, said there had been some speculation — particularly pointing to the Arizona Capitol Times — that he would pursue a congressional campaign in 2018. But he told PinalCentral it’s “just not the right year for me,” to shoot for Congress, though he didn’t let the thought go by without some consideration.

“The next year is critical to moving Arizona forward,” he said in the statement. “The 2018 elections will have real consequences in setting the priorities, direction and what can ultimately be accomplished in the Legislature.”
