State, Casa Grande Council hopefuls talk local issues

Education funding drew a point of contention between candidates running to represent District 8 in the Arizona Legislature.

The five candidates running for the district’s three seats in the Legislature appeared at a political forum Thursday night in Casa Grande to give their thoughts on state government.

Carmen Casillas, a Democrat running for one of the two seats in the House of Representatives, kicked off the discussion by lambasting previous cuts made by the state to public education. She said she was going to fight to put that money back into schools.

In 2015, the Legislature passed a budget that cut $100 million from the state’s universities. About $32 million of that funding was restored the following year.
