Truth in Taxation Hearing Notice of Tax Collection Increase

[NEWS RELEASE] Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) section 42-17107 requires cities in which the total amount of primary property taxes to be collected is anticipated to increase from one fiscal year to the next to notify property taxpayers.  In compliance with section 42-17107, Arizona Revised Statutes, the City of Maricopa notified its property taxpayers of the City of Maricopa’s intention to collect more in primary property taxes than last year through a news release and the information will appear in the local weekly newspapers the Maricopa Monitor and the Casa Grande Dispatch.

“The tax rate for property owners in the City of Maricopa will remain the same,” explains City of Maricopa Finance Director Brenda Hasler. “Due to increased property values the overall amount the City is proposing to collect will increase.”

The fiscal year 2016-17 property tax rate was $4.7845 per $100 of net assessed value, which resulted in a primary tax levy of $10,992,790. For fiscal year 2017-18, the City of Maricopa is maintaining the property tax rate at $4.7845 per $100 of net assessed value however, due to the increase in the net assessed value of residential property within the City of Maricopa, the total primary tax levy will increase to $11,704,000, a 4.2% increase from the 2016-17 fiscal year.

The Truth in Taxation Public Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, 2016 at City Hall at 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza Maricopa AZ, 85138 at 7 p.m.

In compliance with ARS section 42-17107 the required notification reads:

NOTICE OF TAX INCREASE

In compliance with section 42-17107, Arizona Revised Statutes, City of Maricopa is notifying its property taxpayers of City of Maricopa’s intention to raise its primary property taxes over last year’s level. City of Maricopa is proposing an increase in the primary property taxes of $468,429 or 4.2%. This will increase the property tax levy from $10,992,790 in fiscal year 2016-2017 to $11,704,000 in fiscal year 2017-2018.

For example, the proposed tax increase will cause City of Maricopa’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to increase from $459.30 to $478.45.

This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.

All interested citizens are invited to attend the public hearing on the tax levy and the fiscal year 2017-2018 (FY17-18) budget that is scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Maricopa City Hall, 39700 W. Civic Center Plaza, Maricopa, Arizona 85138. A copy of the City of Maricopa’s tentative budget is available for review at the front desk of Maricopa City Hall, Maricopa Public Library located at 41600 W.
