Pinal water group still undecided on agricultural extinguishment credits

After months of meetings and discussions, the Pinal Local Water Group is nearly ready to offer a recommendation to the Arizona Department of Water Resources about the phase out of agricultural extinguishment credits. “Our charge is to come up with a recommendation on what to do with extinguishment credits,” group Chairman Steve Miller said at a Tuesday meeting.

Suggestions made by the group so far have ranged from doing away with the plan altogether, beginning the phase-out in five years or eliminating all the credits now.

ADWR staffer Doug Dunham told the group that a determination needs to be made soon because the agency is conducting long-term water planning.
