Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey’s plan to balance the state budget includes cuts of $75 million to the state’s three universities and a 50 percent reduction for Central Arizona College, according to CAC President Doris Helmich.

The cut amounts to between $1 million and $1.5 million, Helmich said.

“It’s dire. A million dollars means a lot to a small community college,” she said.

The Maricopa and Pima community college systems are facing similar cuts in state aid. Other counties are not affected under the governor’s proposal.

Helmich said the cuts to the Maricopa and Pima schools can more easily be absorbed since their primary tax levy limits can go into the hundreds of millions of dollars, but CAC isn’t as fortunate, with a limit of $55 million.
