Eloy City Council: Tax increase doesn’t pass

EloyA stalemate on the Eloy City Council killed a proposed property tax increase at Monday night’s meeting.

With vice mayor Micah Powell absent for the item, the other six council members were deadlocked 3-3 on whether or not to approve a property tax increase from $1.14 to $1.17 per $100 of net assessed value. A tie vote means the motion to approve the item dies.

Even though it was a very small proposed increase, some council members were dead set against any tax increase and the message it would send to Eloy residents.

“We want to attract more people to come to Eloy,” said councilmember JoAnne Galindo, who added raising taxes would be detrimental to bringing new businesses to the city. “We really don’t need to raise our tax rate (right now) … We have the opportunity to give that relief to our citizens, so I think we should.”
