It is now official. Though the City of Maricopa tax rate will drop this year, the rates for Pinal County, Maricopa Unified School District and Central Arizona College will go up.

Calling it a perfunctory action that is only an administrative necessity, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors approved the long list of property tax rates and tax levies of taxing districts during Wednesday’s meeting.

It was not unanimous.

District 4 Supervisor Anthony Smith said he could not “in good conscience” approve the item.

“There were scenarios presented that did not raise the tax rate and also kept the same level of service but also required a little deeper cut into the county’s coffers,” Smith said. “The biggest problem that I have by raising the county’s tax rate is that does financial harm to some of the other taxing districts, specifically one within my supervisor district, and I think that it could be avoided.”

Pinal County’s rate climbs from $3.799 to $3.999 per $100 net assessed valuation.
