Florence pledging future tax to pay for street work now

With far more needs for street work than the town has money, the Florence Town Council on Monday approved a plan to pledge its Pinal County excise tax payments over the next decade to raise $5.5 million.

In other business, a temporary traffic signal is set to appear in about a month at Hunt Highway and Attaway Road as a temporary solution that won’t cost the town any money. The signal, to be constructed with equipment on loan from Pinal County, is intended to provide more safety at the problem intersection until a permanent signal and other intersection improvements are designed and installed, Town Public Works Director Wayne Costa said.

Councilmember John Anderson said the move shows the town and the County “can team up and get things done.”

The council also voted to direct town staff to issue a request for proposals, or RFP, for a professional firm to write a strategic plan for the town of Florence.
