Casa Grande$1.5 million approved to design facility near Peart, Prickly Pear

The Casa Grande City Council has approved preconstruction services for the community recreation center project.

In a 6-1 vote during Monday’s meeting, the council authorized $1.5 million in expenditures for Haydon Building Corp. to design a 55,000-square-foot facility on a plot of donated land near Peart Road and Prickly Pear Way.

Councilman Dick Powell was the sole dissenter, citing reasons he’s previously voiced at council meetings. The 10-acre donated site chosen for the facility is not big enough for future expansions, he said, and he’s wary of how the fitness aspect of the proposed facility might compete with the private sector.

Powell explained he wants the project to come to fruition, but he wants to make sure the city takes the time to do it right.
