Pinal County destroys building with old adobe

Some in Florence caught off guard, upset by news

The little building on the northwest corner of “Building A” in the Pinal County Complex has been torn down, along with the even smaller old building from early Florence that it protected.

Mayor Tom Rankin commented at the end of Monday’s Town Council meeting that he was upset to see the building had been razed, and it was another piece of local history lost. “That was something that can never be replaced,” Rankin said.

Bonnie Bariola of the Florence Preservation Foundation said the county wanted to tear down the little adobe many years ago, but the State Historic Preservation Office told them not to. The county then built another building over the old building to protect it.
