AJ council approves rezonings, vision document for city, State Trust Land

Apache Junction/Gold Canyon Independent

Property at 351 N. Ironwood Drive zoned neighborhood commercial for a bookstore can be used for a variety of other low-intensity uses, the Apache Junction City Council decided last week in a 6-1 vote.

Possible new uses include furniture and home furnishing sales to electronics sales/repair, indoor building supplies and sales, indoor lawn and garden equipment/supply sales, indoor nursery/greenhouse sales or a grocery store, among others, according to columns on a table shown to the council by Stephanie Bubenheim, assistant planner for the city of Apache Junction.

The change was sought by Sadie LaBerge, who was represented by Steven Bocker, both of Gold Canyon.

“Staff and the applicant have been working together to develop a proposed palette of uses that are low-intensity because we do recognize that all of the surrounding properties adjacent to this parcel are single-family residential. But Ironwood is still a major arterial and has major business nodes south on Apache Trail and north on Superstition Boulevard,” Ms. Bubenheim said to the council.

Voting May 3 to establish the expanded palette of uses for future commercial development on the 0.41-acre property were Mayor John Insalaco, Vice Mayor Robin Barker and council members Christa Rizzi, Chip Wilson, Dave Waldron and Jeff Serdy. Voting no was Councilwoman Gail Evans.
