In remembrance, former mayor Wuertz dies at 93

Wilbur Wuertz, 93, former mayor of Coolidge, nationally known agricultural leader and lifelong area resident, died this week while living at his summer home in the White Mountains.

Wuertz served two terms as mayor of Coolidge from 2002 to 2006 following a prestigious career in agriculture.  The Wuertz family has a long and well-known legacy of farming in Pinal County, dating back to the early 20th century.

That agricultural heritage traces back to the very beginning of the industry in Coolidge, when the state approved bonds for power lines that could pump water over the vast cotton fields. His family came across some land and moved to Coolidge in 1929, just before the construction of Coolidge Dam opened up many more opportunities for farming.
