interstate 11Eloy backs Interstate 11 plan, Casa Grande considers it

Casa Grande Dispatch

ELOY — The Eloy City Council has given its support to an environmental impact study of the proposed Interstate 11, while Casa Grande will consider the matter next week.

The proposed I-11 would transport freight and other goods from Nogales to Wickenburg while bypassing both Tucson and Phoenix metropolitan areas.

The Arizona Department of Transportation requested a Tier 1 environmental impact statement before it can begin work and is asking all affected communities to sign a resolution in support of the plan.

The study will look at proposed routes throughout the length of the roadway and come up with alternatives and proposed no-build areas. The comments on the environmental impact statement are due by July 7 and the study should be completed in three years, according to Eloy City Manager Harvey Krauss.

The economic impact of the proposed interstate could be great for Pinal County with the additional freeway capacity being able to expedite freight movement and create local development along its area, according to Krauss.
