Sheriff hopefuls differ on approach to RICO funds

CASA GRANDE — Thursday’s forum in the primary race for Pinal County sheriff kicked off with a joke but quickly turned to more serious matters.

Republican candidate Mark Lamb was first to the front of the room at Central Lutheran Church and quipped that none of his challengers would be joining him at the forum — a jab at the opening round that left county attorney candidate Kent Volkmer speaking alone; incumbent Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles did not attend.

Lamb’s fellow Republican candidate, Steve Henry, and Democratic candidates Kaye Dickson and Kevin Taylor did appear, however, and fielded questions ranging from the current state of the Sheriff’s Office to how RICO funds — assets seized from criminals — are being used.

Taking a more serious tone, Lamb told the crowded room, “We have got to start turning government around. … I will protect you. I will encourage my deputies to get to know you as people and as residents of this county. And I will do everything I can to encourage economic development.”
