FlorenceCouncil gives mixed directions about sign

You’d think a sign on State Route 79 pointing out the new Main Street extension and historic downtown attractions would be a fairly simple thing for the Town Council to agree on.

You’d be wrong.

The council approved the sign at a cost of up to $16,000 on July 18, and town staff had already ordered it, when Mayor Tom Rankin placed it back on the agenda for the council’s Monday meeting.

Rankin said a businessman had noted the word “Restaurants” could direct traffic away from eateries on the highway. The sign also lists Town Hall, Library, Museums, Aquatic Center, Parks, Shops and Visitor Center.

Council member Bill Hawkins said the sign does not point out any certain business, noting “I think this is a step in the right direction. … I think we need to list what we have on Main Street and be proud of it.”
