SAN TAN VALLEY — Most of the San Tan Valley residents attending a public meeting last week are opposed to the community becoming a city.

But those who would like to see a vote on the matter are undeterred.

More than 200 people came to American Leadership Academy Ironwood Campus in response to an invitation from state Sen. David Farnsworth, R-Mesa, to discuss issues surrounding the question of whether the community should form a city.

One retired man, among the many people to speak over the course of the 90-minute forum on July 27, asked who was opposed to incorporation, and perhaps two-thirds of the crowd raised their hands.

Still, Tisha Castillo told the crowd a bill to break down the barriers to a vote will be back for a third try in the next legislative session.

“So anyone who’s concerned about that, be prepared,” she said.

If the area did incorporate, it would become the largest city in Pinal County, with a population close to 100,000, almost twice the size of Casa Grande and Maricopa.
