Florence gets new mayor

Vice Mayor Tara Walter was winning the race for mayor of Florence late Tuesday with 66 percent of the vote. Walter had 1,005 votes to incumbent Mayor Tom J. Rankin’s 661 in unofficial election results at press time.

“I’m appreciative of the opportunity to serve the people of Florence and I look forward to working hard and I feel grateful to be given this opportunity,” Walter said after a 13-hour day that began and ended at the polls.

Walter, 39, is completing her first term on the Town Council. She is an assistant principal in Florence Unified School District. As a council member, she has also been the town’s liaison to the Anthem area, Central Arizona Association of Governments, Florence Greater Chamber of Commerce, Four Parks Area, Maricopa Association of Governments, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Pinal Partnership.
