Facing public outcry, landowners pull plan for subdivision near Florence monastery

pinal-developmentSo many members of the public showed up for the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Thursday morning that they overflowed the room, only to quickly file outside for an impromptu question and answer session in lieu of discussion during the formal meeting.

Planning Manager Steve Abraham fielded several questions in just a few minutes after announcing that the request from owners and developers Elmore/Brimhall LLC and Benjamin and Orna Avrahami to rezone nearly 333 acres from rural to residential had been withdrawn, and therefore, the commission would not take action on the item at this time.

Residents and worshippers of the of St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery — resting 12 miles south of Florence — voiced their opinions opposing the developments that could have taken place adjacent to their homes and church.
