Pinal County population rises by nearly 12,000 in 2016

The U.S. Census Bureau issued a press release last week dubbing Maricopa County — the greater Phoenix region — the county with the highest annual population growth in the nation numerically.

The county boosted its population by more than 81,000 and ringing in the overall count to more than 4 million. That shakes out to an addition of more than 222 people per day in 2016, according to the March 23 release. Maricopa County also grew the fastest of the top 10 largest counties at nearly 2 percent.

Arizona’s runner-up county with the highest numerical population was Pima County — home to Tucson — with more than 1 million residents.

But that doesn’t mean that Pinal County, sandwiched between the two, hasn’t been seeing population jumps of its own.
