County could redistrict Justice Court precincts

Pinal County’s Board of Supervisors may redistrict and reduce the number of justice of the peace precincts, a decision that could save the county money, though some fear it could also hinder residents’ access to the courts.

The Justice Courts hear civil suits such as evictions and disputes between landlords and tenants as well as misdemeanor crimes like assault, driving under the influence and shoplifting, plus small claims and traffic violations, among other responsibilities.

Referencing the county’s strategic plan implemented in 2014, County Manager Greg Stanley told the board during a presentation last week that the “spirit” of what he proposed to the board connects back to the plan’s goals to review operations, pinpoint ways to become more efficient and achieve greater financial stability in the county.
