Casa Grande appeals OK for skydiving at airport
by Heather Smathers | Casa Grande Dispatch
The city of Casa Grande has appealed a ruling by the Federal Aviation Administration last year that ordered the city to allow skydiving at its airport.
The appeal was filed with the FAA and asks the federal agency to reconsider allowing skydiving. Luther Kurtz, owner of Phoenix Area Skydiving, is seeking to be able to drop skydivers on the airport’s property.
Currently, Phoenix Area Skydiving loads passengers at Casa Grande Municipal Airport and drops them off about a mile north of the city in an unincorporated area of Pinal County. Kurtz has asked the city to allow him to drop his passengers on or near the runway at the airport. When the city declined, citing safety reasons, Kurtz filed a complaint with the FAA.
