Pinal road tax to be collected as planned, officials say

A tax that will be dedicated to roads is set to be collected as planned despite a legal challenge, officials said.

Speaking to the Economic Development Group of Eloy, Pinal County Manager Greg Stanley said businesses will begin to collect the new half-cent sales tax on April 1, as set forth in an election last fall. The excise tax will be put into an escrow account held by the Arizona Department of Revenue until legal challenges have been exhausted, Stanley said.

The voter-approved road tax has been met with legal challenges from the Goldwater Institute, a Phoenix-based think tank, as well as from the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona. But it’s the Goldwater suit that has the most urgency: A hearing next week will determine the timeline for how and when the suit will move forward.
