Coates: Reflections on a dusty highway to Kearny and beyond

I like backroads. The fewer cars the better, I say.

And so I took Florence-Kelvin Highway on a recent drive to Kearny. I had in mind to write about Pinal County’s outliers. The mining towns strung like beads along State Routes 177 and 77.

Much of the highway has the flavor of rural Arizona. Not the Arizona of farms. But the Arizona of people who like to keep to themselves. Homes and house trailers in their own patch of desert.
